Theory and Hazard Perception Test
In order to book you practical driving test you will need to have taken and passed
your theory and hazard perception tests.
Theory Test:
To pass your theory you will need to take a 50 question multiple choice test. To
pass you need to answer a minimum of 43 questions correctly within 57 minutes.

Hazard Perception
You will watch a series of 14 one minute video clips showing potential hazards. You
will need to score 44 out of 75 to pass.
You need to pass both the theory and hazard perception tests to gain the theory test
certificate
The Driving Test
The driving test will last approximately forty minutes where you will be tested in
a number of areas where you will have to demonstrate a certain level of competence.
The areas are as follows
- Eyesight, you will need to be able to read a number plate from a distance of 20.5
meters if you are reading an old style number plate or 20 meters if you are reading
a new style number plate.
- Show me Tell me, you will need to be able to answer some basic questions relating
to the maintenance of a car. A copy of the questions can be found here.
- You will have to complete two reversing exercises on your driving test, these two
will be chosen from the following Reverse Bay Parking, Parallel Parking, Reverse
around a corner and a turn in the road (Three point turn). In addition to the two
manoeuvres you may be asked to carry out a controlled stop formally known as an emergency
stop.
- Moving off, they will be looking for safety and control
- Use of mirrors when signalling, changing speed or changing direction.
- Signals, when necessary, correctly and timed.
- Clearance to obstructions
- Your response to traffic signs, road markings, traffic lights, other road users and
traffic controllers.
- Your use of speed.
- Your following distance.
- Progress, are you using the appropriate speed, are you hesitating unduly.
- Junctions, approach speed are you going to fast to slow, observations, turning left
and right and that you don’t cut corners
- Judgement when overtaking,, meeting and crossing other traffic.
- Your positioning when driving normally and you lane discipline.
- Pedestrian crossings, how you react to them.
- Awareness and planning.
- Eco Safe Driving , are you driving in a way that will help to protect the environment.
You are allowed to make up to 15 minor faults on your driving test with no serious
or dangerous faults.
If you pass your test the driving examiner will take your learners driving licence
and you will be issued with a certificate that will act as your driving licence until
you receive your full driving licence in the post usually within 3 weeks.
